Tia and Jon both knew they always wanted to leave Minnesota. The winters were just too harsh, they say. So before they headed off to balmy South Carolina, the two were married — then they decided to start planning a wedding.

The austere corridors of Minneapolis City Hall just couldn’t quite compare with the tulle and lace most little girls daydream about while planning their walk down the aisle. Tia and Jon dreamed up a better vision instead. They would return home for a more traditional wedding so family and friends could share in the celebration.

The couple will once again recite their vows, only this time in the beautiful sunken garden at the Como Park Conservatory, which just so happens to be the same venue my wife and I chose for our wedding. Needless to say, I’m excited to get back in the space and document this special event for Tia and Jon.

While on a recent visit to Minnesota to solidify some wedding plans, Tia and Jon found some time to celebrate their first anniversary with a photo session only blocks from where they officially became husband and wife. Luckily for them, it was a rare 70-degree March afternoon.

Anthologie photos amplify Meredith Fierke concert

Recording artist Meredith Fierke & the band will perform 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 9 at the Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault with special guest Dylan McKinstry. A special art exhibit featuring the work of Anthologie photographer Dan Iverson will augment the concert.

Iverson has been documenting Fierke’s world since March 2009, as she set out to make her debut appearance at the famed South By Southwest music and arts festival in Austin, Texas. Fierke’s reputation has since gained momentum as her music was featured on last year’s Cities97 Sampler.

After a winter of hibernating in the studio, Fierke has emerged to stir the minds of her dedicated listeners with a preview of her upcoming album. The Faribault concert marks only the second time Fierke’s latest creations will be heard by a live audience. A portion of the images Iverson gleaned from the past year will be on view in the Paradise lobby beginning with Fierke’s concert April 9.

The exhibition will be open to the public April 10 – 16 at the Paradise Center for the Arts, 321 Central Ave., Faribault, MN. Tickets for Fierke’s concert are $12 and are available by calling 507-332-7372.

Artists’ reception brightens Bridge Square

trainsong

"Sixth Street," from The Train Song exhibition.

The past month as been a time of transition for Anthologie. I truly appreciate everyone’s patience during the remodeling of our offices and gallery at 18 Bridge Square. The Garage and Anthologie have repurposed our building, bringing a hip venue for business and the arts in downtown Northfield.

This past weekend, we hosted an artists’ reception for myself and Meredith Fierke with the opening of “The Train Song,” a photography exhibition combining my images with Meredith’s personal blog entries, chronicling her ascent in the music industry. Visitors were treated to a special, extended version of the exhibition featuring images made this week with the events coinciding with the release of the Cities97 Sampler Vol. 21, on which Meredith’s music is featured.

A special thanks to all who came to visit our space and support the arts! As a thank you, door prizes were awarded during the opening. Our winners are:

• Sara Ohotto Bauer, limited edition Dan Iverson print

• Cari and Eric Goodman, “The Procession” CD by Meredith Fierke

• James and Molly Bauer, complimentary Anthologie photo session!

For those who missed the opening, not to worry: The exhibition will remain on view at the Anthologie Gallery through Dec. 18, 2009.

Anthologie celebrates the written words and voices of patriotism

As we celebrate our national holiday of patriotism, we would like to point out that the Declaration of Independence commemorates a document of ideas rather than marking the beginning or end of any war or battle. We, too, wish to salute ideas and words with our latest project, “American Anthologie,”

John and I will interview and photograph champions of the ideals on which our nation was founded. We are not only interested in speaking with soldiers and veterans, but anyone with an American spirit and a story to tell.

Tell us what it means to you to be an American. Tell us when you felt the most American. Tell us what your hopes are for the future of America. We will interview you, photograph you, preserve your memorabilia and create a custom book telling your american story – safeguarding it for future generations.

What you need
• A story with an American theme
• Momentos associated with the story (badges, newsprint, letters)

What you get

• a 20-page book, the chronicle of your story, beautiful images

What it costs?
$120 to cover our expenses (Regular price $750)

Deadline
Please contact us at 952.232.5830, e-mail info@theanthologie or fill out our contact form HERE by July 31, 2009 to reserve your session

Anthologie making headlines

Tyler sets the scene for a late-night proposal May 9, 2009, in North Mankato.

Tyler sets the scene for a late-night proposal May 9, 2009, in North Mankato.

In early May we were thrilled to have one of our favorite clients contact us for a very special occasion. Tyler, whose family I have been documenting for the past yer, had planned to propose. I was fortunate enough to capture the moment and sort of become part of the story. See my earlier blog post HERE.

Shortly thereafter, we were contacted by a writer from the Mankato Free Press who had read our blog and was intrigued by the story. John and I, along with Tyler and Ashley, were interviewed in late May for a feature story which highlighted the entire experience and was recently published in the Free Press “Currents” section. Tyler plots the perfect proposal

Since proposing to my own wife eight years ago, I’ve relished the idea of capturing that significant moment for another couple. Today that idea became a reality.

On Thursday, Tyler contacted me to let me know he was planning to propose to Ashley on Friday night – make that Saturday morning – after her shift got off and wanted to see if I’d be available to record this event for their family. (I have been documenting their family history since July 2008. You may recognize them from our “Miracle of Life” portfolio).

I was thrilled and honored that Tyler would have the pressence of mind to contact me for such a momentous and deeply personal occassion. Of course I would be there, the challenge was how to pull this off at 3 a.m. with sparse ambient light and without Ashley noticing me as I in no way wanted to interfere with what happened and with respect to their privacy.

My first question: “How are you going to do this Tyler?”

He wanted to involve their son Logan. Tyler shared with me at the hospital shortly after Logan’s birth that he knew he wanted to marry Ashley and that life’s events simply came at them out of traditional order. Thus, he had the opportunity to allow their 8-month-old son to be a part of a milestone typically reserved for two.

Tyler had a T-shirt made for Logan saying “Will you marry my daddy?” on the front with a “yes/no” on the back. They both wore tuxedos and Tyler flooded their home with tea candles and flowers for Ashley’s arrival — sorry ladies, Tyler doesn’t have brothers.

Tyler further set the scene by creating a path that would lead Ashley to the dining room (the same dining room where I began the couple’s 9-month maternity photos) where Logan would be encircled by candles with the box for the engagement ring at his side. From there? Tyler didn’t have a plan.

It’s just something that he would figure out as it happened, he said.

All that remained was for Ashley to come home.

After much pacing and some comforting to Logan who had been up way past his bedtime, Tyler finally received word that Ashley was on her way home. I made my way out into their backyard where under the cover of darkness I would be able to peer my lens through a break in the curtains that Tyler had arranged for me.

At long last Ashley came home and discovered Tyler and Logan waiting on the dining room floor. I sensed she figured out what was going on as I could hear her cyring through the walls. Luckily, I was behind glass so that what was said between Ashley and Tyler was completely private as Tyler got down on one knee and put the ring on Ashley’s finger.

I could then hear Ashley struggle through tears to excitedly say “I can’t believe this is happening!” and “Yes!”

After a few short seconds I was gone and Ashley had no clue I was even there — until now!

Congratulations Ashley! I’m so excited for you both.

I was able to interview Tyler as he waited out the final moments before Ashley’s arrival so look forward to a complete story and more photos soon.

Anthologie opening soon in historic downtown Northfield

The dust has settled and the paint has dried — well, sort of anyway.

John and I have been absent from the blogosphere as of late as we’ve been working around the clock to finish renovations at our new studio and fine art gallery, opening Tuesday at 18 Bridge Square in Northfield.

After the official Anthologie website launch April 1, John and I wasted no time moving to the next “big thing” in our own story — signing a lease and immediately going to work. And working on a number of projects, including our “No Foolin’” lifestyle portrait promotion and the build out on our new location.

On top of matching the interior of the space to coincide with the Anthologie aesthetic, we’ve completely gutted and remodeled the bathroom and added walls to give the space a better flow. John and I have also installed a unique photo mounting system for our gallery (pictured below).

The studio will include a gallery of our own fine art photography and we will participate in the Northfield Riverwalk Arts Quarter, putting our own stamp on the vibrant arts scene the community already has and bringing our patrons to Northfield to help stimulate area businesses.

After weeks of cleaning, painting, fixing and plumbing, John and I were finally able to move in our office furniture today!

Our first official day of business will be Tuesday, however, we’re already booked solid with assignments, so you’ll have to wait until Wednesday to come by and say “hello.” We strongly encourage all visitors and interested parties to schedule an appointment with us by using our contact form as we’re often working on location. However, our typical work hours will be Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursdays noon to 8 p.m.

We will introduce ourselves to the community Friday, May 8 as an official sponsor of the Northfield Girls Night Out. Please stop in at Sisters Ugly to purchase tickets in advance to participate in our “wristband only” special event. More details will be coming soon.

Special thanks to our families, friends and clients for your patience throughout this past month (John and I have been hard to reach), but we truly appreciate all the support.

More of our story is coming soon!

Changes at Dan Iverson Photography

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

My business partner, John Magnoski, sets his lens on the bride and her bridesmaids while photographing Sept. 12, 2008, at the Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, Mass.

It’s been nearly 11 months since I was laid off from my post as a newspaper photographer.

The past year has been challenging and exciting. My biggest lesson has been recognizing and acting upon great opportunities when they present themselves. One such opportunity is the merging my business with that of an amazing photographer, John Magnoski.

The notion of partnering with someone else to offer even more products and services to my existing clients and potential clients won’t be allowed to slip away. Our new business model will equate to even better photographs and a more comprehensive approach to documenting our clients’ life experiences than ever before.

Following are some FAQs regarding the changes:

Q: What will become of Dan Iverson Photography?

A: Dan Iverson Photography will still be a fully operational enterprise. However, I will continue to move more and more towards reserving this business for editorial and fine art photography and small projects that don’t require the strength of two full-time photographers.

Q: What will happen to your website?

A: The domain www.daniversonphotography.com will not change and will continue to have updated content and the same features present today.

Q: I’m an existing client, what will happen to my password-protected galleries?

A: Nothing, your photos will still be online for you to share with your friends and family.

Q: How can I keep up with all the changes?

A: My blog http://www.daniversonphotography.com/blog will also continue to be active and will by no means be put on the back burner. In fact, you can now expect an increased frequency of posts.

Q: Who should I contact if I’m looking to book you as a photographer?

A: For editorial work, contact me directly at dan@daniversonphotography.com. For weddings, lifestyle portraiture and commercial work, please contact us here.

Q: Why should I commission you through the new business instead of Dan Iverson Photography?

A: That’s simple — results. The final product will be far superior by having two experienced, professional artists working on your project. You will get the best of both worlds. John has nearly a decade of experience as a photographer who takes the director’s approach to working with his clients, setting up beautiful environments and compositional dynamics that might otherwise be missed. I have nearly a decade of experience as a photojournalist, capturing people as they are and finding significance in everyday life. Together, we form a sum greater than its parts and you get to hold on to the results forever!

Q: What else can I expect from this new business?

A: New approaches to telling your life’s story.

Q: What is this new business called?

A: Anthologie. And it’s here now!

A new day, a new story

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Welcome to Anthologie, heralds of exceptional stories — your stories. It has long been asserted that to stake claim in the annals of history, one must achieve a grand level of public significance, celebrity or notoriety. We believe everyone’s lives are noteworthy; that all life is precious.

In a world that focuses on momentary possessions, we believe it’s time to concentrate on everlasting and priceless gifts: family, relationships and shared experiences that fade away when left unrecorded.

It’s a subtle art, capturing the essence of individual histories, but we are committed to harnessing those spirits with photographs, reportage and various media. We take the time to develop a rapport with you, understanding not just who you are, but what matters most to you. By building that relationship with you, we are able to develop an extraordinary collection that is both sophisticated and sensible.

While there are many myths and misconceptions about photography, Anthologie challenges the falsehood that most photographers work only one day a week. On the pages to come in the future, you’ll notice that your event is only one point on the Anthologie timeline, a continuum of service that begins well in advance of your event and endures into the future.

Welcome to Anthologie. Your story begins now.
